A Lady and a Pigeon Last Wednesday at noon Mrs Bowron from Bournville, UK, went shopping. On the road, right in front of her house, she saw a pigeon lying there. Mrs Bowron thought that a car had probably hit the bird that morning and injured it. She called a vet and told him about the bird. He advised her to take it to The Bird Rescue Centre in Worcester. Hot Air Balloon Crash Lands1 in San Diego A sunset wedding ceremony in a hot air balloon didn’t go quite as planned yesterday. The balloon crash landed in the garden of a San Diego house because of strong winds. So, the plans to fly until the sun set had to be cancelled. It happened just after the bride and groom exchanged wedding rings, and the balloon could no longer be controlled. After the crash landing, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported that one of the 10 people on board suffered a back injury. The married couple told KGTV that the wind caught the balloon and made it move slowly from side to side over the neighbourhood. The whole situation was filmed by the surprised owner of the San Diego house. The video showed the balloon hanging from trees near his garden afterwards. Despite all that, the married couple and their guests enjoyed their wedding reception in a nearby restaurant soon after the accident.

One summer night in 2012, a search was organised in Iceland to find Inga Árnadóttir, a tourist who hadn’t returned to her tour bus after a 10 pm rest stop. But the funny part? She had returned. Inga became part of the group of tourists looking for her because she didn’t know that she was the person everyone was searching for. The tour bus had stopped near Iceland’s Eldgjá canyon. Inga used the time to go to the bathroom and change clothes. When she got on the bus again, the passengers didn’t recognize her. Instead, they became worried that she’d gone missing. The search of the area went on for two hours, but the group failed to find Inga. So, the tour guide called the police. However, before they arrived, Inga had realized that she was the missing tourist. She was right in Eldgjá canyon at that time, and called the tour guide from there immediately to stop the search. The police advised everyone to count the passengers properly next time.

I’ve just finished my third Arduino project and I’m already thinking about the next one. You don’t know what an Arduino project is? It is a project using something like a tiny, very simple computer (only a board with microcontrollers) to build digital devices. I learnt about Arduino at school and I’ve been using it since. The first thing I created with the help of Arduino was a wireless keyboard. It went well so I tried to make a TV remote control next. I enjoyed it as much as creating the keyboard and while working on the remote, I was already thinking about my next project. It was an LED wall clock for my mum’s new office. I loved the project and I definitely want to make another LED wall clock one day. Now my brother wants my next Arduino project to be a robotic arm for him, but I’ll go for another wireless keyboard instead. I want to create a much better one now. Hey, guys! So, those of you translating the short text on page 34, congratulations! You are finishing the homework for Thursday’s French class. Yes, it’s due in six days, not four! I thought it was due Tuesday, too, if it makes you feel better. Anyway, the last exercise on page 33 is what Mrs Léfèbre wants us to fill in and have ready for Tuesday’s class. The teacher also told me I may use the vocabulary on page 32 to be able to do the homework. But we learnt it a week ago, so, no problem. The Blue River English Language Camp
This is a basic information leaflet about camp life during your stay.
Further information at 4 pm in the main building.
Accommodation and meals: All participants1 stay in double rooms. All your meals, except for lunch, will be served in the main building. The mid-day meal will be given to participants in brown bags to eat outside because the main building is closed at lunchtime.
English classes: 9 – 12 every day. You will be divided into groups, depending on the level of your English. Check the notice board to see your timetable, and please remember to come to class on time. Otherwise, you will be prevented from joining an afternoon activity that day.
Afternoon activities: After classes, you can take part in a range of activities in the camp. There are a variety of options, including some activities prepared only for those who are just starting to learn the language. We also organise sailing lessons which take place on Lake Tayn. The lessons are designed for those with some experience with sailing as well as for those who have never tried it. Check the times and places of the activities on the notice board.
Free time: Spend your free time in the camp or outside it. It’s up to you. Just note that every time you want to spend your free time outside the camp, you must be accompanied by a member of the staff unless you are at least 16. If you d ecide to visit Wauxhelm, the nearby town, you need to take a bus. There is a bus stop at the camp and three buses – a yellow one (at 2:15 pm), a blue one (at 3:30 pm), and a red one (at 6:00 pm) stop there. However, the last one comes from the town instead of going to it. So, keep that in mind while planning your visit to Wauxhelm.
Day trips by coach: Day trips are organised on Saturdays; everyone is expected to take part.
A Day Trip t o Lake Lowren
You will go to Lake Lowren where a cruise is booked for you to see the wildlife. Before lunch, apart from swimming in the lake’s clear water, you can also go sailing. The afternoon hike along the lake includes stops at places of interest. A six-kilometre hiking tour might be too much for you to walk without a break so there will be one every two kilometres. This way, you will not hike more than two kilometres without stopping and the tour will be less tiring for you. After the tour, you will go back to the camp.
A Day Trip to Lake Moer
After arriving at Lake Moer, you will visit the Moer Farm on the shore. Then, you will spend some time on Linteau, one of the islands on Lake Moer, where you might see many rare birds. In 2019, a bridge was officially opened to connect the farm with Linteau. It replaced the ferry run by the farm. So you are lucky to be able to save time because a ferry is still the only way to get to the other islands on Lake Moer. After visiting Linteau, you will have lunch back at the farm. Then, you will set off on a hike along the lake. The footpath round the lake is 6 km long but you will hike only half its length to the coach which will take you back to the camp. Although there are many opportunities for you to spend time in the swimming pool in our camp, having fun in Lake Moer will be an unforgettable experience for you. You will not have another chance to swim in Lake Moer during your stay.

The Story Beh ind a Famous Photograph Professional photographer Charles O’Rear often drove through Sonoma County, California to visit his girlfriend. He loved the region’s hills so he waited for the right moment to take a picture of them. Then, one Friday in 1996, the right moment finally came. So, Charles O’Rear stopped his car and took the now-famous photo. He thought about eventually sending it to National Geographic, as they had bought some of his previous photos. So had the Los Angeles Times, whose editors would surely be interested in more photos of the California countryside. In the end, he decided to upload it to a photo licensing website. Then in 2000, Microsoft was looking for a photo that would make a default desktop background1 for its newest operating system. Microsoft found O’Rear’s photo on the photo licensing website and bought it from him.
O’Rear was never told exactly why his photo was selected and he was only left to guess. ‘I believe they wanted a photo of a nice summer countryside because their new operating system was going to be introduced in August. If that was the case, they couldn’t be more wrong,’ says O’Rear. He admits that he had been waiting for the right moment to take the photo since October of the previous year. It was only a week after New Year’s Eve when he finally took it that Friday. However, he didn’t upload the photo to the website right then in January. He found time to do so two months later, in March. ‘Every time I tell people when I took the photo, they’re surprised,’ laughs O’Rear.
When people see the photo, many of them recognize it. But they hardly know what the author of the photo looks like. And those who do are often curious. They want to know: Did Charles make the grass and the sky look brighter on his computer? They can’t believe he didn’t. It was the Microsoft team, they changed the colours in the end. Charles was not angry about it. But Charles was disappointed with Microsoft about something else. It did not publish much information about the place in Charles’ photo. Charles says, ‘Some people think that it is a photo of New Zealand. I wish more people knew it is California.’ The one thing that Microsoft and Charles agreed on was never to publish the price. Charles can only say that it was the most he has ever been paid for a photo. When people ask him, he jokes that he got $1,000,000 for it. But nobody ever believed that he had got so much.
One more thing is also not well known: the Microsoft team gave the photo a name – it’s called ‘Bliss’. It was because the word bliss described what they felt every time they looked at it. Sometimes they dreamt they were in the photo, listening only to the wind blowing and to birds singing loudly. The Microsoft team would look at the photo on their PC screens for a few minutes ev ery day. It was the only chance during their busy day to just sit and relax. The bright green grass, the sky, no traffic and no people – nothing could make them any happier. Charles O’Rear says, ‘That’s why I think the name matches my photo perfectly. That’s what I often felt while driving there.’ Although Microsoft stopped supporting that version of the operating system a few years ago, ‘Bliss’ will never be forgotten.
People have tried to find that piece of land and take a photo of it too. When they come to the place, they are surprised that it looks different now. That is because they expect to see a golf course or something similar. Some people go and knock on the doors of the new houses near the place from the photo. They go to those houses to ask about the rows of grapes. That’s what they see on the piece of land instead of the grass. The truth is that the grass was only there for a few years in the long history of this traditional winemaking region. If it was a region with a history of animal farming, there would be an animal farm there now.
